Laptops have been going through evolution from the time it was built. As far as the memory is concerned, the new technology laptops have a large built-in memory, but still, additional memory benefits windows. Additional memory allows you to do multitask smoothly which isn’t much smoother with the laptop’s built-in RAM. For example, the computer slows down when multiple tabs are open. With additional RAM, the workflow will be efficient, and you will be able to perform several functions at a time.
Knowing the several advantages of the additional RAM, people still do not incorporate it into laptops. The main reason is that they fear the damage to laptops while adding a new component. The fear is real as it can happen if it is not carried out properly. In reality, it is a simple and easy process that only needs focus and care while handling. Adding RAM does not cost you much money and the process takes 10-15 minutes. Here is a brief guide on how to add RAM to your laptops.

Installing RAM on Laptop

Step 1: Check your memory
Before adding the RAM, the first step is to check whether your laptop has the space to accommodate the new RAM. This is because sometimes the RAM is soldered onto the motherboard and in this case, it is difficult to add additional RAM to the laptops. After making sure that you can accommodate a new RAM, look for the memory space. Once you enter the model of your laptop, you get the information on the total memory your laptop can have along with the slots.
Step 2: Unplug external power
Laptops require a few volts to work, so directly touching the inner components of the laptop will not hurt you. But the static charge, can damage the components of the laptops. So, discharge yourself first before touching any component. This can be done by touching the metal surface.
After that, unplug the charger and turn the laptop upside down. Now, remove the battery from the laptop.
Step 3: Remove the RAM cover
Laptops have flaps fastened with screws with the main body of the laptop. These flaps cover the main hardware of the laptops such as RAM, Wi-fi, etc. Usually, the laptops have three or four flaps, but it depends on your laptop. There are also some laptops that only have one flap. It makes it a little difficult as you have to look for the screws to be placed back in their places once you are done with the work.
It also becomes difficult to search for RAM modules using one flap laptop. But the instruction manual will help you in this pursuit. Make sure to use the proper tool i.e., screwdriver to pull out the screw, and do not press it hard while placing them again. Otherwise, it will damage the laptop.
Step 4: Remove the RAM module
Inside the laptop, flexible metals are used to hold the RAM module sticks in place. While pulling out the RAM module, make sure not to pull it harder by force. The right way is to push the two metals attached to it and you will see the RAM module automatically moving out towards you.
When the moving RAM is at a 45-degree position, pull out the RAM gently from its slot as it is easily removed at this point. Usually, the laptops have two RAM modules, remove them one by one using the above instruction.
Step 5: Installation of RAM module
This is the last step in the RAM installation. The place from which you have removed the RAM module is ready to be taken by a new one. Make sure to look for the groves present on the pins of the slot. When you see the RAM fitted in the slot, gently press it down until the click sound comes. This is the sound when metal plates catch the RAM between them.
After the installation of the first RAM, install the second one in the same way. Your laptop is now ready to be used with the newer RAM. If your laptop hangs before, it should hang after the installation of new RAM.

After the installation of the RAM module, place the RAM cover back. Make sure that you fix the screws carefully back at their place. There is also a click sound that comes when you place the RAM cover. After that, also place the laptop cover back in its place.

Step 7: Turn on the laptop
Now is the time to turn on the laptop and check whether you have successfully incorporated the RAM or not. For this, go to the start menu and then click the system. Here you can see the amount of RAM on your laptop. If it matches the RAM you have installed, you are good to go.
